 DMU

10th April 1982

A two-car Class 108 DMU formed of Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M51422 & Driving Trailer Second Lavatory (DTSL) M56490, was accelerating away from Bamber Bridge and about to pass over the footcrossing at Asland Close whilst working a Preston to Colne service on April 10th 1982. This location was then wide open, trees now line the trackside along here. The Preston - Colne services were once a solid Cravens duty, by 1982 most of the local Cravens power twins were gone, being totally worn-out. A lot more 108's then appeared and from 1983/84 onwards some two car 104's with their centre cars removed, they being ousted from their long-term Manchester-Blackpool workings by newly-transferred Swindon Class 120's. By 1985/86 there was a real mix of units running, as the Pacer problems started to manifest themselves. Martyn Hilbert.

A BRCW Class 104 two-car DMU formed of cars M50528 & M50454 was approaching Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on June 4th 1982. The leading car, Driving Motor Second Lavatory M50528 was once part of three-car Manchester-Blackpool set, and still retained its white bodyside line from the days when it made countless journeys along the busy commuter route from the Fylde Coast to Manchester Victoria, until the 104's were ousted by cascaded Swindon built Class 120 units. Class 25 25133 was just visible to the right of the DMU, stood in the headshunt at the end of the goods loop/District Civil Engineers sidings. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

5th June 1982

A two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M50468 & M50516 was approaching Bamber Bridge at Walton Summit with the 12.46 Colne to Preston service on June 5th 1982. The then open fields to the left of the DMU have since been covered with a housing estate. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

20th November 1983

A Class 108 two-car DMU with Driving Motor Brake Second M53944 at the rear, was stood at Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on November 20th 1983. In the distance is the bridge constructed in red brick, that takes the M6 Motorway across the East Lancashire route. The structure was the first Motorway over Railway bridge in the UK, this section of the M6 (The 8 mile Preston By-Pass) between Bamber Bridge and Broughton, opened in December 1958. Unfortunately the original brick bridge was encased by new structures on both sides when this section of the M6 was widened in the 1990's. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

24th July 1984

With the gable end of the terraced houses on Carr Street visible on the left, BRCW Class 104 Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M53444 was accelerating away from Bamber Bridge with a Colne to Preston service on July 24th 1984. A view taken over the low wire fence in what was the then undeveloped former goods yard area at Bamber Bridge. Martyn Hilbert.

Minus its centre trailer coach, Swindon built Cross-Country Class 120 DMU with car M53661 trailing, awaits business to be concluded at Bamber Bridge whilst working a Preston to Colne service on July 24th 1984. At the time the Class 120s were normally on Manchester-Blackpool services and the appearance of one working to East Lancashire was most unusual. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

10th August 1984

Class 100 Gloucester 53355 and Cravens Class 105 53812 were the last two asbestos free types of their respective classes in service, and both were formed into a two-car set for their last period of operation. On August 11th 1984 the unit was departing from Bamber Bridge whilst working a Colne to Preston service. Class 40 40118 was in the adjacent loop awaiting to reverse an engineers train into the nearby DCE sidings at Brownedge. When finally withdrawn in 1988 53355/53812 were destined for the NRM at York, but whilst in storage at Crewe both cars were vandalised beyond repair and were subsequently scrapped by Vic Berry at Leicester. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

20th June 1985

Having been on a Preston to Colne service, a two-car Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53465 & M53531 had been placed in the District Civil Engineers Sidings at Brownedge, just to the West of Bamber Bridge on June 22nd 1985. One of the wheelsets was located in a temporary skate, and was awaiting attention. The DMU is sat close to what was once Bamber Bridge Junction, and the 'road' alongside the 104 is on the site of the 1850 Preston Extension that ran from Bamber Bridge to Preston EL, via Todd Lane Junction that was abandoned in 1972. The unit is stabled on what had once been a loop between Brownedge Crossing and Bamber Bridge Junction. Dominating the skyline on the right of this scene is the former Bamber Bridge Spinning Company Mill complex. Martyn Hilbert.

The non-too common sight of a Tyseley allocated Derby built Class 116 Suburban three-car DMU (M53120, M59442 & M53077) at Bamber Bridge with a Colne to Preston service on August 3rd 1985. With its Tyseley Depot board in the cab window (TS513), it would appear that the unit had been temporarily allocated to Newton Heath Depot to cover a shortage of DMU sets. Martyn Hilbert.

Winter light at Bamber Bridge on November 10th 1985, with a two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53466 & M53511 with a Preston to Colne service. The set was finally withdrawn from Newton Heath Depot in 1989 and scrapped by Berry's of Leicester in 1990. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

31st January 1987

A two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53442 & M53516 was awaiting departure from Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on January 31st 1987. The set was withdrawn in 1990 and scrapped by Mayer Newman at Snailwell in Cambridgeshire in 1991. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

24th October 1987

Still carrying its Western Region W prefix to its number, Class 116 Suburban Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) W53087 was passing Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Clitheroe special working on October 24th 1987 with W59037 and W53129. Through the offside cab window, someone with a Mayorial chain can be seen sitting in the front saloon behind the cab. The unit had previously been allocated to Cardiff Canton and had been transferred to Newton Heath in September 1987, at a time when there was much flux in the surviving members of the first generation DMU fleet to provide cover for errant class 142's, the better examples appearing in parts of the country that they had never previously worked, the situation being eased as the new BREL York Class 150/2 Sprinter fleet came into service. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

24th October 1987

A two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars 53541 & 53522 was awaiting departure from Bamber Bridge with a Colne to Preston service on October 24th 1987. The unit had been allocated to Bletchley in 1982 and had spells at Cricklewood and Old Oak Common, before being transferred back North to Newton Heath in June 1987 to cover for errant Class 142's. Just visible on the rear car (53522) is the Network South East branding. The set was finally withdrawn at Chester in July 1989. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

7th August 1988

Set: N600

At 8.28pm towards the end of a fine Summer evening with the sun setting in the West, an eight-car DMU forming a Carlisle to Preston 'Dalesrail' service was stood at Bamber Bridge on August 7th 1988. With the rear of the train standing on the level crossing, the driver was looking back along the train. The formation was M54268 & M53934, M53334 & M51206, M53492 & M53439, M53948 & M53944. Martyn Hilbert.

A pair of Tyseley allocated Class 117 Suburban three-car DMU's, with Driving Motor Second (DMS) M51411 leading (presumably with 59521 + 51369), were passing signal PN491 as they were approaching Bamber Bridge with the Sunday only Blackpool North to Carlisle 'Dalesrail' service on April 15th 1989. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

29th June 1991

Set: LO275

Morning sunlight was reflecting on the windscreen of Longsight allocated set LO275, as it departed from Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on June 29th 1991. The Class 108 was formed of cars M53980 & M54256 and was passing signal PN486 which was then mounted on the platform. At the time, the station had small stone built shelters on each platform. The one on the eastbound platform was constructed from the stone blocks of the old Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway building that once graced the platform here. The opposite (westbound) platform had a shelter built from imitation stone (concrete) blocks. Both these structures were short-lived, they were replaced by anodised aluminium shelters with small glass panels. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

20th June 1992

Set: 101240

A well-worn looking Class 101 two-car DMU formed of cars M53231 & M54388 was stood at Bamber Bridge with the 16.27 Preston to Colne service on June 20th 1992. The set was allocated to Manchester Longsight Depot (101240) and this was the period when the remaining survivors of the first generation DMU fleet were kept in service due to the ongoing woes with the Class 142 Pacer fleet. Martyn Hilbert.
